Universe in Captivity

Elsewhere

'When daydreams take hold of meditating men, details grow dim and all picturesqueness fades. The very hours pass unnoticed and space stretches out...' - Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

When living with depression, it's easy to get lost in sadness. It's all you know and, despite it being miserable, to leave that comfort for the unknown is more terrifying than the prospect of remaining where you are. I wanted to focus on this, as well as the idea of the Collection - something which had become characteristic of my project.

Enacting on a desire to stare up into the sky, I aimed to create a universe within each of these jars. I wanted every jar to give you a peek into an ethereal, shimmering Elsewhere - a place which is aspired to, but inaccessible. In this story I imagined the jars as an expensive collectible, one you might find in a supernatural high-end catalogue. I envision a Wistful Character behind the collection: longing for escape, collecting and hoarding, spending all their money. In yearning for Elsewhere, and in living for the dream of a potential better universe, the protagonist is wasting their time in their own reality.
